Boxing

For the past four  weeks Ed Griffin and Mick have been teaching the three sixth classes boxing .We have been focusing on jabs, crosses and our boxing stance .We have done body sparing twice and this week we will do full contact head and body sparing.

We usually go to Drimnagh boxing club but this year we will be doing it in the P.E. hall. We have now completed our Bronze boxing programme in our first four weeks. In our next four weeks we will complete our Silver boxing programme. The last four weeks will only be a selection of  boys, who will complete in the Gold boxing programme against boys from other schools.

At the end of our boxing programme, everybody in sixth class will receive the three certificates  -bronze, silver and if your lucky you will get your gold certificate. This is also part of our 6th Class Graduation Programme.

Croker is Calling

Good news came back to the school from Whitehall Park last Thursday evening as our senior footballers came through the semi-final of the Championship. In a nail biting game, the Castle were victors against a strong Holy Family Swords team after extra time. Having made a nervy start and lady luck not on their side, the boys eventually powered through in the second half of extra time and won by four points. This now means the boys will play in Croke Park on November 8th at 12:10pm.  This is a great achievement for the boys and their coaches Mr. O’Connor, Mr.Toher and Mr. Briody,  who have been working with the team since last March. The team have upset the odds on many occasions against schools from traditional footballing powerhouses and will need to continue this in the final against Castleknock. We hope to have a large travelling support on the day, who as usual with sing their hearts out. Hats, Flags and headbands have already went into production for the big day! Castle Abú!

Castle Cup Round-Up

P1090401

Drimnagh Castles annual gaelic football tournament, The Castle Cup, has been taking place over the past two weeks. This tournament gives every boy a chance to play gaelic football against boys of the same class level on their PE day. Each class is broken into two teams and an open draw is carried out to see who plays each other in the quarter finals, meaning you could be drawn against the other team from your class! It was a great experience for all boys who took part and hopefully we will see a few new faces around our local GAA clubs!

6th Class

Ms. Tarpey was blessed with two very strong teams which were littered with senior footballers from this years team. After some very competitive games in the earlier stages it was Ms. Tarpeys Richie Delaney and Daniel Coloe led team who took the cup. In the final they faced surprise packages Ms. O’Connors team led by Darragh Harmon and spear-headed by lightning quick Adam Smallhorne. Ms. O’Connors class fought until the end but were undone by some fantastic scores from Hayden Roache and Richard Delaney.

5th Class

It was Mr Stapletons room 12 who earned all the bragging rights in 5th as both his teams faced each other in the final. In blistering heat, all teams performed well throughout the day. Ms. Martin’s team, led by Martin Collins, were very unlucky to lose out on the final spot. In a great final with numerous stand-out performers, it was Mark Brennen’s team with goal-machine Ashton Keogh up front who held out for the win.

4th Class

With two very strong teams from each class, the 4th class Castle Cup winner was the hardest to call. Mr. O’Neils pre-tournament favourites led by senior footballer Jack O’Neil made it through to the final. However, it was Mr Donnellans team led by senior football newcomers Reece Kavanagh and Shane Daly won grinded out the win. The standard on show from all boys was excellent, which no doubt coincides with the high number of boys from 4th class playing with GAA clubs. This is a testament to the work done by the external club coaches and the boys teachers since 2nd class.

3rd Class

It was Mr O’Connors team who claimed the Castle Cup for 3rd class. There is no doubt that the boys took inspiration from their Sir’s All-Ireland winning exploits from earlier in the year. Brad Geraghty, who lifted the cup, thanked Mr Grehans team for a great game in the final.

2nd Class

Mr. Mahers team which was led by Ben Farrell took the cup back to room 9. Each boy got to put the skills they have been learning with Luke and Paddy into practice and had a very enjoyably day in the sun! Unlucky losers were Ms. Timbs room 3.

Cricket

Coaches form Leinster Cricket have been in school over the past number of weeks helping coach Cricket to the 5th class boys. This is a great opportunity for boys to experience a sport which they may not know much about. Also, it is a great opportunity for boys who have experience in cricket to display their skill to their classmates!

School Leagues

School Leagues are up and running again for another year. Every boy from 3rd to 5th class who wants to play can play. All the teachers help manage the teams. Some are more competitive than others. It is great fun. After the school leagues are completed, Mr. Toher and Mr, Briody will name their Blue Stars Selection. The semi-finals and final will be held next week. Watch this space…

Update:

The league final will take place on Friday when the raging hot favourites Loch Gorman take on gutsy Liatrom. Loch Gorman are being captained by Daniel McGill while the boys from Liatrom will be led out by Moses Alabi.

Loch Gorman head coach, Mr. O Neill, will go head to head with his old foe, the audacious Mr. Howard. It is the first time in league history that both managers in the final will have strong hurling backgrounds and this maybe a sign of things to come in the Castle with the hurlers making huge strides in recent years. Mr. O Neill will be assisted by the cunning Ms. Byrne and the shrewd Ms. Timbs who are gearing up Loch Gorman for the big game. On the other hand, Mr. Howard will have the politically-charged Mrs. Lawlor and the astute Ms. Tarpey at his side. Ms. Tarpey is a Mayo native and this could, unfortunately for Liatrom, have a huge telling on the overall result!

The boisterous Mr. O Neill is quoted as saying in a recent interview ‘ I envisage a good game of football but ultimately I think we’ll cruise to a 15 point victory!’ Mr. Howard has refused to respond. Tension building up here in the Castle….. Throw in 01.30!

Loch Gorman crowned champions!

Congratulations to Loch Gorman who were crowned school league champions after a controversial game where play was suspended due to horrific weather conditions. The champions were presented the trophy by past pupil of the Castle, Tom Bishop. To read more about the game , MVP and most improved player of the league please visit the school blog…
