4th Class

Here you will find information on various 4th class activities.

Busy Times in Room 11

After our week back from the Christmas Holidays, we did a lot of activities. We first made some animals from newspaper. In maths we revised most methods we had previously learnt (Before the Christmas Holidays).

We then learnt to play the song “Fáinne Geal An Lae” on the Tin Whistle. Then we started to read a novel called “KrindleKrax”  which focuses on a boy called Ruskin Splinter who wanted to be the protagonist of his school play, but the others thought he shared no characteristics of which resembled a “Hero”.  For art we made some monsters made from clay, which took longer than expected.

We also made some levers (dog levers) from card and paper. We were first handed two sheets, the first containing a dog and the other containing a tail and tongue. We were told to colour them in. After we coloured both sheets in, we were supposed to glue both sheets to sheets of card. Afterwards we had to poke holes into the marks that said A, B & C. After that we cut the tail/tongue out. Then we cut the picture with the dog out. We then folded the sides of the picture. We then cut open the mouth of the dog. Then we placed the tale through the middle and put the tongue through the mouth. And finally we put a pin through A, B & C.

Science Week in Room 9

This week we had lots of fun. We worked on three experiments for science week.

  1. Coloured flowers: For this experiment we used four food colours (red, blue, orange and red). We put them into water. We put daisy flowers in with the coloured water and carefully watched. The petals turned the colour of the dye and the water got lower and lower.
  2. Cleaning copper coins: For this experiment we tried two methods. We washed dirty coins with water it didn’t work. So we used salt and vinegar and washed them afterwards. It worked! The coins were so shiny, it was amazing.
  3. Lava lamps: This was our main experiment. We got two litre bottles and we filled them over half way with oil. We then put 500 ml of water in with the oil. We found out that oil and water does not mix, the oil floats to the top of the water. We then chose a colour and put ten drops of food colouring in. Finally an alka-seltzer tablet which made a fizz. All of a sudden the tablet exploded and made lots of bubbles, it was so cool.

The four 4th classes are starting to learn tin whistle. We are all very excited. We are beginning to learn the different notes and the scale. We are very good at the notes D and E.We have also started practicing the notes F,G,A,B.

When we are very good at the notes D, E and F, we will start to learn the song ‘Mary had a little lamb’. I am really looking forward to this. We have only been learning tin whistle for 1 week and we are so good already.

In room 5 we learned about Japan. We found out about cool things like Samurai, Bushido, Origami and Haiku. We learned loads of cool facts about Japan and we wrote them into projects. We also made our facts into our very own Acrostic poems. Here are a few examples…

Japans biggest mountain is Mt. Fiji.

About 127,800,000 is the population.

People go to see the Volcano.

About 377,855km is the area.

Now there are 12 Million people in Tokyo.

Japan is a wonderful place,

Also it has great history.

Perhaps I will tell you some

And it is a very big place,

Nearly five times the size of Ireland.

‘Friends For Life’ is a programme we do every week on Wednesday. Friends for life is a programme that helps boys to develop friendships and create positive relationships within the classroom.
We have been doing it for the past two weeks. We do a different subject each week and we finish each session with meditation and relaxation. This week we were learning all about feelings and we did a pizza massage! We learned that positive thoughts are green and that negative thoughts are red, just like traffic lights! Ms. Martin and Ms. Lawlor are the teachers who do it with us. At the start of the session the teachers ask us our happy thought of the week and our goal of the week. The teachers then tell us their happy thought and goal also.
Ms. Lawlor sometimes reads nice poems out to us and plays relaxing music during meditation. Meditation helps everyone to relax and not to feel tense.
We move the tables back against the walls and put the chairs into a circle so that everyone can see each other and communicate easily. We always look forward to Friends for Life because it is great fun and is a perfect way to end the day! Mr. Donnellan seems to really enjoy it too!!

Out in the wilderness

Lost in the wilderness, Nothing to do
Fire ran out, no more fuel.
Walking and walking out in snow,
Walking in circles, three in a row.
Losing my sight, I am giving fight
Against the frightful wilderness.

Reaction times

We learned that our reactions are sometimes fast or sometimes a bit slow. How we learned was good. We had a paper ruler, a clip and clay. We Cut out the ruler and joined it to the clay using a paperclip. We had a partner and one of us held the ruler and the other tried to catch it when we let go. You could measure how long it took to catch the ruler and we wrote it into our copies. Here are my reaction times.

Test 1 0.19
Test 2 0.16
Test 3 0.17
Test 4 0.12
Test 5 0.19

We use our reaction times all the time. We use them when we are out on yard so that we don’t bump into people. We use them when we race we even use them to catch a ball.

We all got help from our parents and family. It was fun to do and everyone learned stuff about what people did for there project. We all learned loads about Dublin and cant wait for the next project during the year.
